Jeremiah 49:1-33

Today Jeremiah returns to the theme of God cleaning out the various nations of the Near East.

49:1-6 | Ammon was located in what is modern Jordan, with its capital city at Rabbah (modern Amman).  The study Bible tells me that Milcom is another name for Molech, the god of the Ammonites.  My only real exposure to Molech is in Chesterton’s Everlasting Man, where he equates Molech with Baal (if I remember correctly), and sets it up as a decadent, evil alternative to true worship.  There’s no significant theological insight here, other than knowing the false gods of Israel’s contemporaries.  Oh, and read Everlasting Man!

49:7-22 | Edom is the nation of those descended from Esau.  Not much else to say about that, but I like being able to identify the nations who play such a large role in Biblical history.
